CALLS TESTED
ADJUSTABLE DEER CALL
{buck grunt,doe bleat,fawn bawl}
PREDATOR CALL
GTC SPACER MOUTH CALL

I first became acquainted with Gene Blackshire this fall on a new outdoors forum where we are moderators for the members forums.After many conversations about deer hunting and our mutual love of archery and the outdoor lifestyle I discovered that Gene makes and sells hand made hunting calls.I had just finished telling him about a well known call that seemed to scare the hell out of our deer in northern Alberta and the offer to test his calls came about.

After a long wait for the post office to deliver the calls they finaly arrived and I had my first look at them.I was immediatly impressed,however I had not tried them yet.The first call I will talk about is the deer call.It came with a lanyard that is spring loaded so as not to slip and the grunt tube is collapsable to take less space in a pocket or pack and can be bent when extended to direct the sound in your preferred direction.Another excellent feature is that these calls are easily dissassembeled for cleaning in minutes,and the reeds are replaceable.As I live in a climate where we have A problem with cold and condensation I was impressed by the fact that the call can be reversed on the grunt tube and instead of blowing inhale for cold weather use and it becomes totaly frost free without any loss in sound quality.This was confirmed in -20 c temperatures this November.Although I did not capitilize on some oportunities for "wall hangars" I did have very good success in calling deer,bucks and does to within bow range on numerous occassions.

The call was particularly effective in bringing back deer that had spooked and run a short distance for cover.While the deer were blowing and snorting A few soft grunts would bring them back each time.I found the call to be very efective when used in conjunction with rattling and did not have any indications that it is not user friendly and reliable even in sub zero temperatures.I was able to take 2 whitetails while using this call and will continue to use it next year when the season reopens in Alberta.The only complaint I have is that an extra "O"ring should be included with the call for those times that we may loose one.A spare ring slipped over the lanyard may just save the day.At this time I do not know of any other call maker that includes a spare "O"ring on their calls.

The next call I tested was the predator call.It resembles the deer call very closely and the only difference is the reed assembly.All of the features I talked about for the deer call apply to the predator call too.As stated above this call is also able to be made frost free by simply reversing the call to the tube and inhaling.Sound quality is not lost and this call is very effective for Alberta Coyotes.The first time I used it I had 2 adults come in to 20 yards without hesitation.I lowered the volume and brought them in to 10 yards,still looking!On an other occasion I watched 5 coyotes crossing a field at about 300 yards in the early evening.A couple of cries and they stopped,a second series of cries and they fanned out and came straight in until the lead coyote was only 5 yards from my deer blind,on the ground.At the same time I watched a doe make her way from the other side of the field towards me.I was making a call similar to a fawn bleat and she was responding as well as the coyotes.I tried using the predator call several times while deer hunting and had numerous occasions to observe deer and coyotes respond and come in without hesitation.I now cary both the deer call and the predator call when deer hunting as this eleminates the need to adjust the deer call should I want to call for does when I am trying to fill my antlerless tags.Bottom line,this call works and as a bonus it doubles as a deer call and won't freeze up in cold weather.

The last call I will talk about is the GTC spacer mouth call for predators.This call was easy to use and is a great addition to any bowhunters arsenal.When used in conjunction with the predator call it makes close up calling a snap while anchored at full draw.I found that I could easily imitate many predator call sounds and low volume was no problem for close up calling.Another feature I liked is that I could easily make elk calls with the same call that produced clucks,chirps cries and whines.I had good success in calling coyotes to within 5 yards during our bow season for deer and would not hesitate to use it for any predator situation.

We should remember that a call is only part of a system to be used harvesting an animal.When used with proper cover and wind direction these calls all worked well .A call is only effective when used within earshot of the targeted animal and when used properly.Knowing when to call and when not to is a learned thing and only experience will give you that knowledge.I highly recommend the calls that were tested here .All calls were tested on wild free ranging animals in Alberta Canada.
