Description from Bearpaw site:

The Phantom is a longbow with exceptional looks!

The short and quick shooting longbow thrills archers because of its handyness and exclusive design. Its limbs are layered with beautiful white curly birch. Its handle consists of solid black Mycarta to give the Phantom stability and shooting rest.

Extremely short!
Extremely handy!
Extremely attractive!

Are you ready for the Phantom?

The Phantom is manufactured in custom quality exclusively for you and will take a delivery time of approximately 8 weeks.

If you have been following my reviews you will be familiar with the Sioux and Blackfoot longbows I reviewed earlier. The Phantom is the newest bow in the Sioux inspired line of short longbows aimed at the hunter who likes a short bow . The Phantom is made on the same form as the original Sioux youth  longbow  . The phantom has been upgraded to a Phenolic riser , like the Blackfoot has , and it also has Bamboo limbs like the Blackfoot but without the carbon Stabil-core the original Blackfoot had  { Later model Blackfoot bows do not have Stabli-core in the limbs.} The Phantom has clear glass over curly White Birch veneers , the Blackfoot model has black glass.

I think we can also use this review to reflect the Blackfoot bows being produced now, as the only real difference is the black glass, and no Stabil-core in the limb.

It would be easy to just copy and paste the Blackfoot review, but there are some differences and time may have changed some of my thoughts, so I will do this as if it is a fresh look at a new bow. According to Bearpaw's Henry Bodnik the stabil-core was dropped from these bows because it was not needed , and had no measurable benefit on this bow . I thought it helped the Blackfoot, but it could have just been the added limb weight compared to the light weight  youth Sioux I had compared it to.

Now that the history lesson is over , I want to get this review going.

Ghost & Phantom

The phantom is a sweet shooting short 54" longbow with a forward handle phenolic riser, bamboo limbs, and sharp looking curly White Birch veneers. The Phantom is a light weight bow despite the phenolic riser, weighing 17 ounces, and it is a pleasure to shoot and hunt with.  It draws smooth and even, shoots very quiet, and is shock and vibration free.

Ghost & Phantom

Like it's cousin recurve the Ghost , the cream colored veneers blend in very well with the natural suroundings we have here. Most of the poplars and willows are varying shades of greys and the veneers blend in perfectly , as well as when it is snowing. if you use the Pop up blinds you will probably prefer the Blackfoot version with the black glass limbs.

The fit and finish on the Phantom is perfect, glue lines are flawless, and the finish is  smooth and  no glare .The grip is very small which is something I like very much. It comes with a suede leather wrap, that I am not  to happy with, but this is a personal taste thing and it is very easy to fix. In 5 minutes I unlaced the grip and turned it inside out, giving it a smooth leather finish. I like the finished smooth leather best and it is child's play to change it . The Blackfoot has the same grip and I changed that one to Beaver Tail, it looks great, but that took a lot of time and effort. The easy way if you do not like the suede grip is just unlace it and turn it over like the grip in the photo below.

Like the Blackfoot  the Phantom is made to hunt in all conditions.  Those of us that like short bows know we can always shoot them anywhere you can shoot longer bows, but often we can comfortably shoot short bows where it is near impossible to shoot a longer bow. The Phantom is a very welcome addition to my short bow rack, and it will have it's share of hunting time in the woods.

All arrows were shot from a static release, by hand at the same session. Actual draw lengths are confirmed / coached by Pat my wife. I use a constant power supply, and a light kit on the chronograph.

Every bow in all of my reviews are set up to be hunting quiet, with minimal vibrations, shock etc.

They are not set up for the fastest speed possible . Chronographing was done at 6 3/4" brace height .

To sum up the review of the Phantom , It is a bow I very much enjoy to shoot and hunt with. It is a pleasure to shoot, and is as quiet as any bow I have.  I like to hunt with short bows and this is definately one I enjoy taking in the woods.  At first I thought it would stand out , because of the cream / white limbs, but after setting it against the poplars and willows I realized it blends in very well.  It does handle a 29" draw, but 29" is what I feel is it's upper limit. I think it is best suited to a 28" draw length.

All Bodnik bows now have a 30 year warranty!!!

This warranty is good for all subsequent owners of the bow, not just the original purchaser.

"Our guarantee applies to 100% on the bow because our quality has nothing to do with the owner of the bow.
