           Take Down Recurve Big Bear

The background for the development of the Big Bear was to produce a hunting recurve which is fast and steady in shooting. By using the combination of Bubinga and Mycarta the middle part was given more weight and stability. The design of the middle part and of the recurves makes this bow to one of the fastest hunting recurves in his class. Due to its own weight our Take Down can be shot precisely and arranges the arrows excellently.

Review

The Big Bear recurve is available in 2 lengths, 62" and 64".The model I have for this review is the 62". The Big Bear is an easy to look at 3 piece recurve with very nice shooting characteristics. It sits well in the hand, and a repeatable grip or hand position comes naturally.  It braces quite low if you wish , and still has a quiet ,shock and vibration free shot at 7 "brace height . The recommended brace height is 8" for the Big Bear, but I have found that it shoots very nice at a  lower brace, where a bit more power can be realized. I like to shoot it at 7 1/4" brace. It is a nice to find a recurve like the Big Bear that does not need a large brace to shoot well and feel good in the hand after the shot.

The fit and finish of the Big Bear is typical of all Bearpaw/Bodnick bows , that is ,very good. There are no issues with the glue lines which are precise, and the finish is without flaws. The limbs are made with beautiful Olive wood Veneers over Maple  with a carbon stabil-core center core . The finish is a non glare or  satin, that looks good and enhances the looks of the olive wood.

Handling and shooting the Big Bear reminds me a lot of it's 1 piece cousin the Redman. These bows are quite similar in looks, feel and overall characteristics, with the Big Bear weighing slightly more.  The Big Bear is a very pleasant bow to shoot. The limbs are very quiet, stable, and the glass is clear, without those annoying white streaks that are so common these days. It is longbow quiet at a 7 1/4" brace height with a single set of silencers on the string. The glue lines are as close to perfect as we will find on any bow. Like all Bodnik bows the tips are reinforced with phenolic overlays, making them compatible with  modern high performance strings , like the Whisper String that comes with it.

The Big Bear is well suited to the Hunter, or the target shooters needs, whether this is 3D or targets or field archery. The Big Bear just shoots well in any situation we choose. It certainly will be another bow in my hunting rack, and will be spending time in the Alberta woods this fall. It is an easy bow to like, that shoots even better than it looks. The 62" length makes the string angle feel very good on the fingers at full draw.

All arrows were shot from a static release, by hand at the same session. Actual draw lengths are confirmed / coached by Pat my wife. I use a constant power supply, and a light kit on the chronograph.

Every bow in all of my reviews are set up to be hunting quiet, with minimal vibrations, shock etc.

They are not set up for the fastest speed possible. Chronographing was done at 7 1/4" brace height .
