Climbing stand directions
Building a climbing tree stand will require a few tools and skills that some of us may need to enlist the help of others to provide. The main item here is a tig or mig welder and a portable grinder for cutting and cleaning the pieces. The welding here is critical unless you want to test your harness. We are using light wall tube that is not easily welded with stick. I used a mig with .023 solid wire and an argon/c02 mix.[blueshield]
The first consideration to build this stand is do you have the welding capabilities or do you have access to someone with them. Next buying the material can be a problem if you don’t have a scrap yard that deals in square tube. Prices vary greatly so shop around for the best deal you can find.
I started by cutting all my material to length, cutting the longest pieces first and working my way to the smallest in order to minimize waste. For cutting I used a 5”angle grinder with a “Zip” disc. A hacksaw will do but that’s a lot of cutting. Now lay out the top and bottom frames and tack weld them. After tacking they can be fully welded all around. Keep them square. Next layout the braces and tack them to the bases after drilling your holes for adjustment. The biter bar can be formed now and I found it best to sharpen and notch it before making the bend in it. With the slider bars in the diagonal braces tack the biter bar in place and make sure it can slide all the way out. Now cut the gussets and the small biters and tack weld them in place .Any welds not finished now can be done at this time. Now cut out the mesh platform covers and tack them in place. The bases may want to bend from to much welding so pay attention to keeping everything square while welding and don’t over do it.
The straps for carrying and the foot straps I used were made from 1” webbing, you will have to make yours to suit yourself. Don’t forget to add a strap to each side tying the top and bottom together so you don’t have the bottom fall down and leave you stranded.

THE FIRST THING TO DO IS TO CUT ALL MATERIAL AND LAY OUT THE PIECES ON A FLAT SURFACE.WITH EACH SECTION SQUARED AND CLAMPED OR HELD START TACK WELDING.AFTER ALL SECTIONS ARE TACKED YOU CAN FULLY WELD THEN.TEST FIT THE SLEVES BEFORE WELDING.MAKE CERTAIN THAT YOU STRAP THE STAND TO THE TREE SECURELY AND FOR ADDED STRENGTH YOU MAY WANT TO ADD A BRACE ABOUT 4 FEET UP TO THE TREE. This can be made like the slider bars on the climbing stand were and pinned for adjustment.
